Shelbyville, Illinois History
Founded in 1827, Shelbyville was actually incorporated in 1863. Named after Issac Shelby, a Revolutionary War soldier and former Governor of Kentucky, Shelbyville has a lot of history, and has done well to preserve its historic sites.
Two inventions are credited to residents of Shelbyville, Illinois: the mechanical dishwasher and the commercial pick-up baler. The latter led to the city being recognized as a historic site of agricultural importance. The home of the man who financed the invention, Horace M. Tallman, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
