Shelbyville, Illinois Area Information

Found just on the lakeshore, alongside the Kaskaskia River, is Shelbyville. Designated as a historic landmark by The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, this small city is known for its rich history and small-town charm.

Shelbyville attracts many visitors because of its prime location right by one of the top attractions in the state: Lake Shelbyville. This 11,000-acre reservoir is the perfect site for camping, boating, and other outdoor activities.

But there is also plenty of things to do within the boundaries of Shelbyville! With a number of shops and restaurants—both local and large chain options—you can easily go out for a meal with the family or quickly grab your necessities from the store.

The city is also home to Dam West Beach. This park sits along Lake Shelbyville and is a big hit with families looking to spend the afternoon by the water. All along the lake you’ll find numerous sites to camp, hike, or to take the boat out.

Also in Shelbyville is Forest Park, plus The Shelbyville Sunken Garden and Shelbyville Aquatic Center located in the area. The city also has its own hospital (HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital) and airport (Shelby County Airport).

Another big draw for the area is Wolf Creek State Park. Nature-lovers will truly adore the Shelbyville area, as it provides so many recreational activities for everyone to enjoy.

Shelbyville, Illinois Real Estate

The real estate market in Shelbyville is typically single-family homes, although the city does also have a small selection of multi-family residences. With many traditional Bungalows (and some Farmhouse and Craftsman-inspired builds), there’s a definite historic charm about this area that many find appealing. In general, architectural style is quite varied, and each home for sale has its own unique flair.

There are a selection of homes for sale that are newer properties, and are therefore built in more contemporary styles. These homes typically come with modern upgrades, such as granite countertops, and are built on larger lots.

Residents of Sullivan have chosen this city as their home because of the quiet streets lined with beautiful trees, the tranquil atmosphere, and short drive to the lake. This city is also popular with nature-lovers looking to purchase a second property.

Shelbyville, Illinois History

Founded in 1827, Shelbyville was actually incorporated in 1863. Named after Issac Shelby, a Revolutionary War soldier and former Governor of Kentucky, Shelbyville has a lot of history, and has done well to preserve its historic sites.

Two inventions are credited to residents of Shelbyville, Illinois: the mechanical dishwasher and the commercial pick-up baler. The latter led to the city being recognized as a historic site of agricultural importance. The home of the man who financed the invention, Horace M. Tallman, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
