Argenta is a small town in Macon County, central Illinois, with a population of around 900 people.

It is located just 50 minutes east of Springfield, 150 minutes south of Chicago and 150 minutes west of Indianapolis. 

Argenta is 20 minutes north of the town of Decatur - the county seat of Macon County. The main transportation routes through Decatur include I-71 Highway and U.S. Highways 51 and 36. Decatur also has its own airport, Decatur Airport (DEC) and a heavy double rail line used primarily for agricultural products.

Things To Do In Argenta

The quaint town of Argenta has many amenities including several schools and churches, a US postal service, an auto repairs shop and some bars - including the very cleverly named Bargenta!

Part of Mason County, Argenta is included in the Decatur, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Decatur is only 20 minutes south of Argenta, where there’s something to do and see for people of all ages. There are several cultural and historic attractions here, including:

  • The Macon County Museum Complex - Home to a restored log courthouse where Lincoln argued three cases.

  • The Lincoln Trail Homestead Memorial - The site of Lincoln’s residence, a short distance west of Decatur.

  • The Millikin University campus - Home to a popular art museum. 

  • Edward P. Irving House - A Frank Lloyd Wright design built in 191

  • The 1896 Transfer House - Once a shelter built at the confluence of Decatur’s transit lines, it was relocated to Decatur’s Central Park where it can be seen today.

If you’re more into outdoor activities, the city of Decatur also has many beautiful parks and nature spots - most notably Lake Decatur, a popular place for boating, fishing and many other water-related activities.

 Argenta History


The village of Argenta was incorporated in 1873, and is currently home to Prairie River Historical Museum, founded by the Prairie River Historical Society in 1996 by a group of locals. Inside the museum, you will find materials and artifacts dating from the late 1800s and up through the years. The building itself was originally the Argenta Grain Office.
